Our Philosophy

The philosophy of Les Petits Pieds Preschool is to provide an early education that strives to achieve the highest level of learning and the enhancement of the French language and culture. We will provide a fully rounded education that meets social, emotional, cognitive, physical and intellectual needs. Our environment will be a safe, fun and happy one where children will learn and develop through play.

Our Goal

Our main goal is to learn and enhance the French language and culture.

For the children who speak French at home, Les Petits Pieds Preschool will provide the readiness skills for Kindergarten. We will provide a stimulating environment in which they will learn, socialize, communicate and have fun.

For the children who are learning the French language, Les Petits Pieds Preschool will provide a safe, comfortable environment to master the language.

All children within the program will learn …

  • fine and gross motor skills
  • communication skills
  • cooperative play skills
  • colours
  • numbers
  • letters

The role of the educators is to provide a positive, encouraging, and exciting environment in which they will learn and grow.

Learning Languages

How Languages are Learned

Acquisition of any language is by assimilation; the language is first heard, then understood, and finally spoken. Think of a baby who listens to people around him for close to a year before he/she utters his/her first words. Children live in the present and learn faster when things are related to their everyday life. In the case of French Immersion preschool, the child’s exposure to French will happen only a few times a week in a closed environment. It is not related to his everyday life nor is it related to you. The child will not feel the need to speak French, and this is natural, normal and to be expected.

Your child will probably not be bilingual at the end of his or her term at Les Petits Pieds Preschool. Nevertheless, he/she will recognize French as a language, and will understand key phrases and will be able to vocalize some words, and will likely sing favorite songs in French! More importantly, he/she will have assimilated and stored much more information related to the French language. Once put in a situation of complete immersion (e.g. all day, five days a week), it will be easy to retrieve and use the vocabulary. As such, we present our program as a preparation to the Francophone school system.

Our Program

Preschool provides a preparation for elementary school by enhancing and encouraging all areas of a child’s development. At Les Petits Pieds Preschool, introducing French is a supplemental program to a regular preschool curriculum. It is our goal, to help your child feel comfortable and at ease with the French language, and to aid in the transition into the francophone environment in Kindergarten. Your child will understand key words and expressions that will give him or her the confidence to adapt quickly once in Kindergarten. It is not the goal of the program, nor should it be expected, that your child will be bilingual by the end of preschool.

Our teaching curriculum is based on the fundamentals of how children learn, and what is important to them at the different social stages.

Child Development

How your Child Develops

2½ to 3½ Years

Children at this age are still in a very egocentric stage of development. They see the world from their point of view and haven’t reached a stage of empathy for others quite yet. Their play is still uncooperative and disorganized (until they reach around 4 years old). They are at a stage of parallel play. Which means they will play side by side even communicating with each other but not necessarily talking about the same thing (e.g. “my dad drives a big truck” and other child will answer “I had cereal for breakfast”). Notions of sharing and waiting for turns are still new or inexistent for most of them. Also, their attention span is very short and they will move from one activity to another very quickly.

3½ to 4 Years

Quickly, the child’s attention span has grown, his speech has developed and interaction with other children becomes more interesting for him, recognizing feelings in others, thus developing empathy and a better understanding of others.

4 to 5 Years

Friendship becomes the new center of attention. Their play is now cooperative and organized. We see the appearance of role play and creativity is at its peak. What an exciting age! Children discover they have a direct impact on their environment and they recognize other people’s feelings. They accept rules and routines; they learn to assume consequences and will emit opinions. It is a time many parents will also find challenging. Many children will test boundaries, empowered by their discovery of influence on others.
